With winter edging in I had once again pulled my Zeiss Universal out of storage. In the process of setting it up I ran into one of those fortuitous situations that come along every once in a while. I had scooped up a gallon of water from the river I live on a few weeks ago and thought I saw some daphnia hopping around. With pipette I caught one, confirmed what it was under the stereoscope, and put it on a slide with a liberal amount of water so as not to crush it. I focused on her with low power and lo and behold, babies were popping out and starting to swim away. Luckily I had already attached my camera so I took a quick photo. Not my best photo but might be my favorite!
